The key purpose of a log splitter is to section off portions of a tree for drying out and to potentially use for firewood. Once a tree is partitioned into one or two foot sections, you can load the portions into the log splitter and a hydraulic ram with a wedge will drive itself into the cut surface of the log laterally and split the log into two pieces to four pieces. There are rams with a single or dual intersecting wedges, a crossing “T”, that will portion the log into four pieces at once. Leaving equal portions in smaller diameter that can be handled and arranged easier than the log as a whole.
